BulbSweep
Combating of fungi and mites in bulbs.
In 2010, a trial aimed at the combating of fungi and mites affecting tulips was started amongst a number of bulb cultivators. After an initial successful trial at one of the farms, the trial was expanded to other cultivators. In this trial, it was determined that further measures are necessary in order to effectively combat fungi spores. Laboratory research performed by Iribov in Heerhugowaard has shown that the ultrasound combating of spores in conjunction with an additive, such as a biological fungicide, is effective.
This effect is also described on page 27 of the literary study by the University of Utrecht under the heading “spores”. Ultrasound makes the spores expand and damages them, and the addition of a low dosage of biological fungicide is enough to cmpletely destroy them.
A trial conducted at the Zwaagdijk experimental garden indicated that ultrasound is effective when used to fight gall mites. The results of this trial have been recorded in a report called the “The effects of BulbSweep in the fight against gall mites in tulips”.
